We often focus on the safety issues of online activities but for young people there are also legal risks they need to be aware of . Often young users do not understand what they have agreed to when they click on “Agree to Terms and Conditions” of a website.

In 2011, Monash University released a report called Teenagers, Legal Risks and Social Networking Sites. This study identified four areas of law that had legal implications for Social Networking Site (SNS) users and so will impact on teens.

  • privacy, disclosure and breach of confidence
  • intellectual property rights (copyright issues)
  • defamation
  • criminal law including harrassment and offensive materials

There are now teaching resources that parents and teachers can access in order to raise teens awareness of risks and obligations. The resources can be found here.
